Carbon deposits form on intake valves and other engine components via the oil mist of blow-by gases from the PCV system. On gasoline direct-injection engines this problem is compounded as there is no fuel to wash the oil mist off the back of the valves. Carbon deposit build-up can cause engine performance to suffer, often setting off diagnostic trouble codes. The solution for removal can be costly until now.
