Cam phasers are speciallydesigned, computer-controlledcam gears that automaticallyoptimize camshaft timing basedon the current engine rpm.Engine oil is pressure fed tothe cam phasers through aseries of passageways in thecylinder heads and camshafts.The engine computers controlsolenoids that adjust this oilflow into and out of thephasers control chambers,giving the ability to retardthe cams up to 60 crankdegrees.

While thistechnology provides tremendousefficiency benefits, such asfuel efficiency and theability to always be in thebest position for maximumpower, regardless of enginerpm, it does present somelimitations when it comes toperformance camshafts.
